The 2/11/2001 statement by Lynette's CPA friend

February 11, 2002

Dear Lynette,

Thanks for sharing your Wells Fargo mortgage file.  Looking through your records, I am surprised and disappointed that a large, supposedly mature institution like Wells Fargo could contend you have not honored your mortgage obligations.  In fact, you have documented evidence that you paid $3,000 more than you owed during the first eight months of 2001.

Wells Fargo's own records appear to be very confusing and disturbingly incomplete.  In many cases the bank's records reflect only part of the money you actually paid.  As an old CPA, I must wonder what happened to the rest of it.  Were there bank errors? Has someone at the bank misappropriated the funds?  How can a bank not account for every penny?  Where are the internal controls?

Rather than getting lost in those Wells Fargo numbers, I have focused on your own clear, documented receipts.  The following table lists every documented payment (exhibits attached), during the eight months January through August 2001.  During that period you can document payments totalling $3,318 more than was required.  Note that I did not include the additional $3,000 cash payment for which you regrettably lost the receipt.

I hope this analysis clarifies the confusing Wells Fargo payments. I would like to think that Wells Fargo will behave responsibly and rectify their erroneous treatment of your family.
